Why do some people find the phrase "Happy Holidays" offensive?
July 30th, 2010 | by admin |This question is directed to those that find the phrase "Happy Holidays" more offensive than "Merry Christmas" for example. I can understand why some people would find "Merry Christmas" slightly offensive–because you’re assuming one follows Christianity. But "Happy Holiday" makes no such assumption. Is it the political correctness that is offensive/annoying or is it something else?
Who knows? I think the phrase, "gofuckyourself!" is much more offensive. Then again, that’s usually my response to "Happy Holidays."

I think the political correctness annoys people above all else. To be fair, political correctness has gotten to a level where we can barely say anything these days.

Its mostly Christians who object to "Happy Holidays" because they want the season to be exclusively about what they celebrate and believe and wish to enforce conformity to such if possible.

i guess they think you’re still implying the whole merry christmas thing still, but really they’re just trying to find some problem. i always say happy holidays. it’s polite because everyone brings in the new year. it’s not a religion oriented holiday or anything.

most people that i have talked to say that they find merry christmas more offensive than happy holidays.
i would say that because when you are saying happy holidays, you are referring to more than one holiday during the winter season. for example, when you say happy holidays, you are referring to all the holidays (Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, & Christmas).

It annoys the Christians who think everything is about them because they say it detracts from Christmas.
The funny thing is this holiday is more about the almighty dollar rather than religion in the United States.

Well, Christians believe that Christmas is about Jesus’s birth at Nazareth. Holidays is appropriate as well. Stores and such rarely say Merry Christmas because some people celebrate Quanza or Hanukkah etc. In my opinion Merry Christmas is just fine.

Some people find anything and everything offensive. They LOOK for things to be offended by.
I am happy for anyone to wish me well.

I didn’t know Happy Holidays was considered offensive. I thought that was the better alternative to saying Merry Christmas. I can only assume some people find Happy Holidays offensive is because not everyone is happy during the holiday season because they are grieving someone or stressed out about something. The holidays can be emotionally draining. Also not everyone celebrates the holidays. Also, some people would just prefer to hear Merry Christmas.

It makes me feel dumb when people say happy holidays.
Ninety percent or so celebrate a form of Christmas.
And when people go to the store and buy for the holidays,
it is for Christmas. It seems that people went to get Christ
out of Christmas, so they say happy holidays, but if I was
a Jew and someone said to me, Merry Christmas, I would
feel warm about it because they meant it as a good saying
and not in a hateful statement. Or if I was Muslim I would
thank them for that. If I was wished an other hoilday instead
of Christmas because they thought I celebrated it, then
I would think them. I think only eight percent of the people
out there want people to say happy holidays. At one point,
some people heard this and put it in practice. Most people
like it when you say merry christmas.

Because Bill Oh Really and the rest of the Fox News mob have told them that "Happy Holidays" is a secular/liberal/atheist/homosexual plot to remove Christ from Christmas and create a New World Order that will round up Christians and Conservatives and put them in containment camps.
